Here’s a flashback to last Summer’s camping trip in Murramurang National Park. Laingy is training chinups on the gymnastic rings by the beach. Our trips were filled with adventure, training, relaxing, reading and eating lots of biltong. We’d come home from these long trips feeling great and looking tanned, lean and strong.

Strength training with rings is effective, simple and convenient. Rings are perfect for travel as they pack away neatly into the smallest of bags. As long as you can find a big ol’ tree with a horizontal branch you’ll be able to whip your rings up and have a session.

Training this way is a great for building upper body strength fast. When you’re on the rings for the first time, you’ll find that remaining stable throughout an exercise is the greatest challenge. The rings are capable of moving freely and they will move in whichever direction you have least control. Conversely, when you’re training in a conventional gym, the equipment is fixated in place and your muscles have the liberty of moving in a way that is most comfortable for them.

None of us can wait to get back to the coast this Summer. Even the shortest of getaways in nature can reinvigorate your body and mind and can provide a new lease of life.
