I’m going to let you in on one of Barbell Biltong’s deepest secrets. It has nothing to do with biltong, but another preserved food instead.

We have the big supermarket chains all figured out. You see, every couple of months they will practically halve the price of canned, wild caught sardines! Once a Barbellbiltongian spots the sale, an immediate message goes out to the rest of the gang asking for bulk orders to be made. We will buy them by the hundreds, clearing out multiple stores around Canberra if we have to. The beauty of it all is that we end up with enough sardines to last until the next sale. Better still, we get to consistently eat sardines, which are a good source of protein and are brimming with omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron and potassium.

Of course, it’s not all sunshine and roses. This rort comes at a price; that price being the fish breath it manifests. If you’re looking for love, or would simply like to keep your current lover, you will need to ensure your fish breath is attended to before it encroaches on the nostrils of others. Beware! There is a strong negative correlation between sardine consumption and the level of romance in your life. There ain’t much female energy around the biltong house these days :(

If you become privy to other systemic food sales, tag us @barbellbiltong and expose it for all it’s worth.

Stay thrifty,
Tom
